Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ma. Subramanian on Thursday laid the foundation stone for a new modern slaughterhouse to be built at a cost of ₹20.19 crore under the Singara Chennai 2.0 project at Aadu Thotti on Saidapet–Alandur Road. Later, the Minister addressed reporters and said this slaughterhouse for goats was originally established in the 1960s. In 2006, when the present Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was serving as the Deputy Chief Minister, it was extensively modernised at a cost of ₹9 crore and upgraded as an ISO-certified slaughterhouse. With the continuous increase in population and expansion of trade, this facility is being developed under the Singara Chennai 2.0 scheme. The ultra-modern slaughterhouse will enable the processing of up to 700 goats at a time. Arrangements have also been made for preserving meat, including cold storage facilities. In addition, 16 retail shops will be constructed, along with rooms for meat distribution. The government places special emphasis on implementing environmental management practices in its industrial units. Accordingly, wastewater discharged here will be treated through a 7 KLD Effluent Treatment Plant. A high-level water tank with a capacity of 7,000 litres will also be installed. Skins and other usable by-products obtained here will be sent to industries, enabling additional revenue generation. A veterinary laboratory and a separate room for veterinary doctors will also be constructed in this modern slaughterhouse, the Minister said.
