No two ways about it: Coulthard says that Formula One is and should be seen as the pinnacle of the sport. | Photo Credit: Getty Images Former Formula One driver David Coulthard called for patience regarding the new F1 rules introduced this year. The new hybrid engine formula with 50% electric power has been criticised by a few drivers on the current grid, as the cars require a lot of energy management. Speaking ahead of the Australian GP, the first race of the season, the former Williams driver, the 13-time Grand Prix winner, felt F1 would get on top of things sooner rather than later. “I’m nervously excited. When I say that, the nervousness is that we hear rumours that Aston Martin may have difficulty completing the Grand Prix or starting the Grand Prix, things that could be taken as negative, but no great engineering challenge was overcome in a few months,” said Coulthard to The Hindu. “It takes time to find [solutions for] engineering challenges. I think that all the teams are here, including an 11th team, which is a testament to the engineering solutions Formula One finds. One thing’s for sure, wherever we are at the beginning of the season, it will be significantly different and better at the end of the season,” he added. With all the talk about drivers lifting and coasting to conserve battery power, Coulthard recalled that in the past, drivers had to manage fuel consumption, but it wasn’t viewed negatively. “There’s no question that Formula One is and should be seen as the pinnacle of the sport, not only in engineering, but in driving terms. I think we just have to get on with the engineering challenge and see where the racing lands. This has to be the fastest and most exciting form of racing. So let’s wait for judgment until we see that,” remarked the former McLaren driver. (Watch Formula One on FanCode).
