Wild tusker, Padayappa, a frequent sight in the Munnar region, has entered its musth period, according to the Forest Department.

The Department has issued a warning to tourists and locals to avoid approaching the elephant or attempting to take photographs during this period.

“The tusker is currently camping in the Nettikkudi area under the Devikulam forest range. The Pettimudy Special Rapid Response Team (RRT) and the Munnar RRT are closely monitoring its movements,” said Munnar Range Officer S. Biju.

“Due to musth, the tusker could turn violent at any time. We urge taxi drivers and tourists to maintain a safe distance,” said the official.

While Padayappa is typically known for his calm temperament and rarely attacks vehicles, officials warned that his behaviour could be unpredictable right now. “Because of his usual gentle nature, people often try to get too close. However, the musth period changes those dynamics,” said Mr Biju.

Padayappa has gained a large following in a region often plagued by man-animal conflict. He is famous for his “friendly” appearances on roadsides and his habit of raiding shops for food without causing structural damage.

The elephant, believed to be around 61 years old, is easily identifiable by a distinct limp—caused by an old injury to his hind leg—and his unusually long tusks.
