“For the first time since the creation of the Health Department, we are in a position where there is no shortage of doctors,” said Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ma. Subramanian.

He along with the officials conducted an inspection at the Tirupattur Government Hospital in Sivaganga district here on Saturday, where he interacted with patients to hear their grievances.

During the press meet there, as journalists raised several concerns pertaining to the absence of maternity and orthopaedic specialists at the Tirupattur Government Hospital and dilapidated state of the maternity ward building, he said six out of the seven sanctioned posts at the hospital were filled and only one person was on deputation elsewhere, and instructions had been given asking the doctor to return.

There was no shortage of nurses and during the inspection, patients expressed satisfaction with the treatment provided, he said.

“I have also directed officials to renovate the damaged maternity building,” he said.

“It must be understood that the number of doctors and staff is allocated based on the tier of the facility — ranging from Sub-Health Centers, Primary Health Centers (PHC), and Upgraded PHCs to Taluk Hospitals, District Hospitals, and Medical Colleges,” Mr. Subramanian said.

Across Tamil Nadu, 1,256 Nalam Kaakkum Stalin medical camps were planned. So far, 1,140 camps had been conducted covering 17,03,683 people, he said.

Minister for Co-operation K.R. Periakaruppan and District Collector K. Porkodi were present.
