The Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) of the Coimbatore City Police on Friday arrested five persons for possessing 130 grams of synthetic drug methamphetamine.

Acting on specific information, a PEW team intercepted a car in the city around 3 p.m. and searched the vehicle travelled by five persons, namely Ajay, Manikandan, Visagan, Abbas, and Dhanush. The police found 130 grams of the synthetic drug in the vehicle.

According to the police, the five persons procured the drugs from outside the State and planned to sell them in Coimbatore city limits. They used mobile phones for coordination and a UPI app for transactions.

The police arrested them for offences under Sections 8(c) read with 22(c), 25 and 29(1) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. In addition to the drug, the police seized the car and mobile phones used by the five men. The five persons, all hailing from the city, were produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.

City Police Commissioner N. Kannan stated that intensive anti-drug operations will continue across the city. He warned that individuals involved in the trafficking or sale of narcotics will face severe legal consequences.

Man found in possession of 415 grams of gold rings without documents

The K.G. Chavadi police in Coimbatore rural on Friday found a man from Kerala in possession of 415 grams of gold rings, for which he did not carry any document. The police said that Joy (54) of Thrissur district was found with the jewellery when they checked a KSRTC bus bound to Coimbatore at the Walayar checkpost. The person and the jewellery were handed over to the Income Tax Department for further procedures.
