The first photography museum to be established under the government in the State will come up at Nadal, Edakkad, in Kannur. The State Budget has earmarked ₹2 crore for setting up the museum. The building that earlier housed the Edakkad block panchayat office will be handed over for the project. The museum aims to create a visual narrative chronicling Kerala’s development across sectors and generations. The allocation was made following a proposal by Minister for Museum, Archaeology and Archives Kadannappally Ramachandran, who represents the constituency. Officials said, at present, Kerala has only one such museum in the private sector. The two-acre earmarked for the project will be transformed into a cultural centre integrated with the museum, catering to students, researchers, tourists, and the public. Plans include an open-air amphitheatre, outdoor photo installations, a sculpture gallery, and a large camera obscura-style installation. The museum will also feature touch-screen kiosks, audio guides, a dedicated photography exhibition hall, a photography-focused library, and a shop area. The facility is expected to serve as a platform for emerging photographers to showcase their work. Workshops, seminars, and photo talks will be conducted, covering subjects ranging from basic photography skills to advanced techniques. Visitor amenities such as parking facilities, disabled-friendly access and a cafeteria will be provided. Tree saplings will be planted to create a green and aesthetically appealing environment, officials said.
