The multi-crore firecracker manufacturing business has come under sharp focus following the accident at the Sri Surya Firecrackers in Kakinada district on Saturday.

The tragedy has once again drawn attention to the rapid expansion of the sector, driven by soaring demand across the State.

Traditionally associated with Deepavali, firecrackers are now used far beyond the Festival of Lights. From New Year-eve celebrations in cities and towns to Christmas and other gatherings, crackers have become a regular feature of public festivities. They are burst during wedding processions, receptions, birthdays, and even funeral processions in certain communities.

Temple festivals, Brahmotsavams, and major religious events, including those at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, witness large-scale use of firecrackers. Village jatharas and local religious processions also add to the growing consumption.

Political celebrations, ranging from election victories to swearing-in ceremonies, rallies and major announcements, frequently involve bursting of crackers. Sporting victories, especially India’s cricket triumphs, spark similar scenes of celebration. The trend extends to college annual days, institutional events, shop openings, commercial inaugurations, and, occasionally, Sankranti festivities.

It is also observed that the prices of firecrackers are often fixed at five to ten times of their actual value, which provides huge margins for the sellers. The price regulation mechanism is also not properly enforced with respect to the firecrackers, according to the consumers.

As the demand steadily rises, firecracker units are spreading across the length and breadth of the State, transforming the sector into a quick multi-crore enterprise, generating revenue and employment.

However, with expansion comes responsibility.

Observers stress that while the industry should be encouraged for its economic contribution and employment generation, the government must strictly enforce safety regulations to prevent recurring accidents and protect lives.
