A major tragedy was averted as Fire and Rescue Services personnel doused a blaze that broke out in a 12-floor apartment complex at Kaloor in the early hours of Wednesday (January 21, 2026). Firefighters rescued residents who were sleeping when thick smoke engulfed the complex. No one was injured. The fire broke out around 3 a.m. in the kitchen of a flat on the seventh floor, and the smoke engulfed the apartments on the floors above. The fire broke out at an apartment where a woman lives alone. “The fire was extinguished by two units of firefighters from the Gandhi Nagar station in nearly two hours. Residents, including elderly people and a one-and-half-year old, were rescued,” an officer at the station said. Short circuit is suspected to be the reason for the blaze.
