The smog that troubled residents of various localities of Dharwad for the past four days was finally brought under control on Thursday bringing some respite to them. Consequently, air quality also improved by evening.

The fire at the garbage dumping yard of Hosayallapur in Dharwad was reportedly due to chemical reaction triggered by the summer heat. And, smoke emanating from the yard engulfed various residential localities in the city.

As the smog continued for four days, the residents staged protests, blocked roads and garbage vehicles demanding immediate action from civic authorities to address the issue.

Subsequently, the municipal staff along with Fire and Emergency Services personnel managed to contain the blaze after days of vigorous efforts. It was at noon on Thursday that the fire was completely doused.

Later in the day, Mayor Jyoti Patil, Deputy Mayor Santosh Chauhan, Floor Leader Iresh Anchatgeri and municipal Commissioner Rudresh Ghali visited the landfill site and reviewed the situation.

Mr. Iresh Anchatgeri said that the combined and coordinated efforts by the municipal staff and fire brigade personnel helped bring the situation under control.

The Mayor and the Deputy Mayor assured the residents that strict measures will be taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents in the future.

Steps will also be taken to ensure proper segregation of wet and dry waste at source.

It may be recalled that because of the agitation by residents and blocking of vehicles, door-to-door garbage collection in Dharwad was severely affected.
