Understanding this variation is critical to effective treatment,” said Prithika Chary, senior consultant in neurology, neurosurgery and epileptology at Kauvery Hospital, at The Hindu’s webinar titled ‘Epilepsy: Management and Care’. Dr. Chary provided a detailed overview of epilepsy, its causes, clinical presentations and diagnostic approaches. She discussed various types of epilepsies and seizure disorders, and highlighted advances in diagnostics and treatment. She also stressed the role of anti-seizure medications and surgical interventions, particularly in individuals living with drug-resistant epilepsy. Explaining the behavioural and social dimensions of the condition, Ennapadam S. Krishnamoorthy, behavioural neurologist and neuropsychiatrist and founder of Buddhi Clinic, emphasised epilepsy management extends beyond seizure control. “Epilepsy may intersect with mental health, social stigma, and quality-of-life challenges. And long-term care needs integrating neurological treatment with psychological support, lifestyle management, and community awareness,” he said. Dr. Krishnamoorthy also called for better policy-level interventions such as access to disability certification and social support systems for people living with epilepsy. He stressed that structured public health measures can help reduce stigma, improve employment and education opportunities, and support individuals and families affected by the condition. Questions from participants covered early warning signs, lifestyle factors influencing seizure control, safety precautions, and common myths associated with epilepsy. Speakers emphasised that epilepsy should be understood as a manageable medical condition and that awareness and timely medical intervention play a key role in improving quality of life. The session was moderated by Athira Elssa Johnson, senior reporter, The Hindu.
