A 70-year-old woman died due to burn injuries after her saree caught fire from a lamp in the temple premises in Kodambakkam on Saturday (January 17, 2026) night. Police said, “J. Shanthi, who was a resident of Bharathi Street in Kodambakkam, had gone to the Bruhadeeswarar Temple located near her area along with her sister-in-law Jayanthi on Saturday [January 17]. As she was lighting a lamp in the temple, her saree accidentally caught fire from a lamp in which she suffered burn injuries to her legs and hands.“ She was immediately taken to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital and was receiving treatment in the intensive care unit with 30% burn injuries. However, on Saturday (January 17) night, she succumbed to the injuries. The Vadapalani police are investigating.
