The egg procurement price in Namakkal, which reached an all-time high of ₹6.40 per egg last month, is now reduced to ₹5 per egg. Namakkal, popularly known as Egg Town, houses more than 1,600 poultry farms and around six crore to seven crore eggs are produced per day. These eggs are sent to various parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and other North Indian States. Likewise, eggs are sent to the noon-meal scheme to government and aided schools. Eggs are also exported to Muscat, Dubai, Qatar, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. Based on the demand and production, the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC), Namakkal zone fixes the price of the eggs on a daily basis. The highest procurement price until November 2025 was ₹5.90, post which, the price surpassed and touched ₹6.40 on December 22 which continued till January 3, 2026. In retail, the egg price touched between ₹7 and ₹7.50. From January, the procurement price started to reduce and on January 19 (Monday), the price was reduced to ₹5. The Tamil Nadu Poultry Farmers Association president and Namakkal zone NECC chairman K. Singaraj said that egg consumption in North Indian states have reduced following winter. Likewise, due to the Pongal festival, the egg movement was affected in Tamil Nadu and eggs started to stagnate, which resulted in the price reduction, Mr. Singaraj added.
