Over 3,000 migratory birds are expected to arrive at Veerapuram in Chilamathur mandal in Sri Sathya Sai district this season, marking the village as one of the key nesting sites in Andhra Pradesh.

District Collector Shyam Prasad on Thursday outlined steps to improve protection and habitat conditions during an inspection of the waterbody.

Interacting with the officials and villagers, the Collector said arrangements would be made to ensure adequate food and water for the birds, which travel long distances from regions like Siberia for breeding. “A caretaker has been appointed to rescue chicks that fall from nests, and the district administration is working with animal welfare organisations to provide treatment and feed when required,” he said.

To tackle water shortages, desilting of supply channels linking Veerapuram, Venkatapuram, and Chilamathur would be taken up so that the village tank retains sufficient water during the nesting period, the Collector added.

“Connectivity between Veerapuram and nearby centres such as Puttaparthi and Lepakshi would be improved on a war footing to encourage eco-tourism. A watch tower has already been set up for visitors,” Mr. Shyam Prasad said.

Tourism officials said that every year, species like painted storks and open-billed storks nest here for a few months before flying back. Villagers continue to play a traditionally key role in protecting them. Officials said the focus now is on filling the gaps while keeping the habitat undisturbed.
