Kanniyakumari District Collector R. Alagumeena said that efforts have been intensified to increase the voter turnout in the upcoming Assembly elections, while addressing the media at the press conference organised at the district Collectorate in Nagercoil on Thursday.

She said that the district has a total of 15,20,550 voters and measures were in full swing to ensure hassle free voting in the upcoming elections. She noted that polling stations which recorded lower voter turnout have been identified across the district, and extensive awareness campaigns were being done to increase the voter turnout.

To encourage the first time voters, special awareness programmes were being conducted at 180 colleges in the district, including at prominent tourist locations through unique initiatives.

She further noted that to make the voting process easier for residents of Pechiparai and other tribal hamlets, boat services have been arranged throughout the day.

“Arrangements have been made for over 7,700 army personnel from Kanniyakumari district to cast their votes through online facilities,” Ms. Alagumeena said.

She also highlighted voters can report on any discrepancies and malfunctions to the helpline numbers 1800 599 8010 and 1950. A 24×7 control room was established at the district collectorate, she added.
