The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) State secretary G. Ramanna demanded the immediate cancellation of the Parliamentary membership of Putta Mahesh Kumar Yadav, MP from Eluru, on Sunday. The federation members burned an effigy symbolising the ‘drugs demon’ at Vuyyuru centre in Krishna district as part of a protest. DYFI district convener Lakshmi Narayana led the protest. Mr. Ramanna said it was shameful that an MP, who is expected to be accountable to the public, was directly caught in a drugs case, and demanded that his Parliamentary membership be cancelled immediately and that he be strictly punished. He also urged the TDP to expel him from the party to prove its integrity. He also called on all political parties to suspend leaders who had links with the drug and ganja mafias. Mr. Ramanna alleged that many murders and incidents of violence against women in the State were linked to ganja and drug abuse, and expressed concern that people no longer felt safe. The DYFI leader also criticised the government for ‘failing to support the family of a youth leader Penchalaiah from Nellore, who allegedly lost his life while fighting against the ganja mafia’. He described the government’s inaction as shameful and demanded protection for those who raise their voice against the drug mafia. He alleged that drugs and ganja mafias operated in the State with active support of politicians and said that this particular incident had proved it. DYFI leaders Somasekhar, Durga, Konda, Rajesh and others participated in the protest.
