Activists and residents of fishing hamlets in Nagapattinam district have raised concerns over the absence of playgrounds and recreational spaces in several coastal habitations, saying lack of sports infrastructure is depriving youth of opportunities for physical activity and community engagement.

Residents from over a dozen fishing hamlets spread across Nagapattinam, Kilvelur, and Vedaranyam taluks said that young people in these villages have virtually no designated spaces to play outdoor sports such as football, volleyball, or athletics.
