: A trailer truck driver died after his vehicle plunged into the sea at Chennai Port in the early hours of Thursday, triggering a search and rescue operation by the police and port authorities. The deceased was identified as Mariappan, 35, a native of Kovilpatti in Thoothukudi district. He had arrived in Chennai on Thursday to pick up a container load meant for Thoothukudi. When he failed to return, a search was initiated. Preliminary inquiries revealed that Mariappan allegedly took a wrong turn inside the port and lost control of the vehicle, which slipped off the edge and fell into the water. Following the incident, rescue personnel conducted an intensive operation, and later retrieved the vehicle along with Mariappan’s body from the sea. The Royapuram police have registered a case and further investigation is under way.
