Over 300 dogs will participate in a dog show at the Karavali Utsava grounds on January 25, organised by the District Animal Husbandry department and Dakshina Kannada district administration. The dog show is part of the ongoing Karavali Utsava.

Talking to reporters on January 14, Deputy Commissioner H.V. Darshan said that various dog breeds, including Labrador, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Beagle, Siberian Husky, Rajapalayam, Maltese, Chihuahua, Dalmatian, Mudhol, Pug, Dachshund, Dobermann, Boxer, Bull Dog, Shih Tzu, Pit Bull, Pomeranian, Lhasa Apso, Cocker Spaniel, Great Dane and other local breeds, will participate in the show.

Prizes will be awarded by breed, age, and based on health, agility and growth. Top performers in each category will qualify for the championship round, with cash prizes from ₹ 5,000 to ₹ 25,000 for the top five dogs.

There will be special performance by dogs maintained by the district and Mangaluru city police, Mr. Darshan said.

Dog owners can register on www.dogshow.com by January 23 or in person on January 25 from 10 a.m. to noon. A total of 200 dogs would be allowed to participate in the event.

Dog shelters

In response to a question about creating dog shelters as directed by the Supreme Court, Mr. Darshan stated that Dakshina Kannada has approximately 60,000 stray dogs. The district administration plans to establish a shelter in each taluk of Dakshina Kannada. A site in Bondantila village has been earmarked for setting up a dog shelter to cater to stray dogs from Ullal, Mulki and Mangaluru taluks, he said.
