Doctors at Aster Ramesh Hospitals, Guntur, successfully performed a rare awake coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) on a 64-year-old high-risk patient, marking a significant medical achievement. The patient, with diabetes, hypertension and triple vessel disease, had previously undergone lung cancer surgery, leaving him with severely compromised lung function. Considering the high risk associated with general anaesthesia, the surgical team led by senior cardiac surgeon Dr. Jayaram Pai and senior DM cardiac anesthesiologist Dr. Loganathan opted for an awake procedure. The surgery was completed without ventilator support, reducing post-operative complications. Managing Director Dr. Pothineni Ramesh Babu said the success demonstrates the potential of advanced cardiac care for patients with poor lung function, setting a new benchmark in high-risk surgeries.
