The ruling DMK is continuing talks with actor Vijayakant’s Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) on the possibility of bringing the party into its alliance for the 2026 Assembly elections.

Sources said that DMDK general secretary Premallatha Vijayakant, who has been in touch with DMK leaders, has asked for a two-digit number of Assembly seats, in addition to one Rajya Sabha seat. “Her primary demand is a Rajya Sabha seat, which the DMK is willing to consider. But there is no question of allocating as many Assembly seats as she has demanded,” a source said.

According to DMK leaders, the party is prepared to offer six Assembly seats to the DMDK, with the possibility of increasing it to seven. “We cannot go beyond that. The DMDK must realise that it has a bright chance of winning these seats only as part of the DMK alliance. Its prospects are extremely weak if it aligns with the AIADMK,” a senior DMK leader said.

The AIADMK-BJP combine has already finalised its alliance for the 2026 Assembly polls, with its launch attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The DMDK stayed away, having failed to reach an agreement with the AIADMK-BJP alliance, despite having been part of it in the past.
