Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu hands over a Pongal gift hamper to a beneficiary in Virudhunagar on Thursday. | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement Distribution of Pongal gift hampers began in Virudhunagar district with Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu formally inaugurating it on Thursday. A total of 6.04 lakh rice ration card holders in Virudhunagar would benefit under the Pongal gift hamper scheme. The hamper contains one kg of raw rice, one kg of sugar, one sugarcane, dhoti and saree and ₹3,000 in cash. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Thennarasu said that the welfare schemes of Tamil Nadu Government had reached all so much so that there can not be even one family that has not been benefited. The schemes have benefited infants, students, women, elderly people and farmers, he said. “The development of the State is see in each village. The Chief Minister has created Tamil Nadu into the largest growing economy in the country,” he said. A total 5.64 ration card holders served by the Department of Cooperatives, 34,924 families served by Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation, 1,062 families from Sri Lankan Tamils Rehabilitation camps and 3,704 women ration card holders would benefit in the district. The Minister inaugurated the distribution at Sivakasi. Virudhunagar Collector N. O. Sukhaputra, MLAs, A. R. R. Srinivasan, G. Ashokan, Sivakasi Mayor I. Sangeetha, Joint Director of Cooperative Societies, Senthil Kumar, Sivakasi Sub-Collector Mohammed Irfan, District Supply Officer Amarnath were among those who were present.
