The Kozhikode district administration has launched a comprehensive building audit under the Sahamithra disability protection project, an initiative for making Kozhikode a fully disabled-friendly district. The initiative aims to improve accessibility of public buildings across the district. The audit is conducted as a collaborative framework of local self-government institutions, the Composite Regional Centre (CRC), campuses of Kozhikode, the National Service Scheme (NSS), and the Association of People with Disabilities (APD), along with various government departments. A press release said that the first phase of the project, focusing on campuses, has already been completed, and the second phase of the project saw significant progress on Saturday (January 2). Volunteers from eight colleges have audited over 150 buildings in a single day. The authorities have set the deadline to complete the audit by mid-January for all the identified public buildings. The project ensures structural modifications to ensure all public places are accessible to persons with disabilities, according to national and international accessibility standards.
