Amid mounting concern over alleged security lapses and the circulation of videos showing inmates indulging in prohibited activities, Director General of Police (Prisons and Correctional Services) Alok Kumar on Saturday carried out an inspection of the Kalaburagi Central Prison to assess its functioning and security arrangements.

Mr. Kumar visited the prison, located on the outskirts of the city, and inspected each barrack thoroughly, seeking detailed explanations from officials on the reported smuggling of mobile phones and other restricted items, lapses in supervision, and allegations that inmates were leading a life of privilege inside the prison.

The inspection follows the recent circulation of videos on social media purportedly showing inmates gambling, consuming alcohol, and smoking inside the prison. The footage triggered sharp criticism and raised serious questions about prison administration and enforcement of rules.

Officials said that Mr. Kumar examined security protocols and questioned staff on accountability for the alleged violations. He warned that stringent action would be initiated if prohibited articles, including mobile phones and narcotic substances, were found during the inspection.

P.V. Anand Reddy, Additional Inspector General of Prisons; T.P. Shesha, North Zone, Inspector-General of Police (Prisons and Correctional Services); Sharanappa S. Dhage, Kalaburagi City Police Commissioner, and Anita, Superintendent of Kalaburagi Prison, were present.
