Deputy Commissioner Shreerupa visited the Government Primary School at Somwarapete near Chamarajanagar city to review the functioning of an “air-to-water” (atmospheric water generation) unit installed on the campus.

A press release issued by the district administration said the 100 litres per day (LPD) unit, installed by a private company, produces potable water from atmospheric air.

During her visit, the DC reviewed the unit’s operational mechanism, examined its performance under local environmental conditions, such as humidity and temperature, and assessed the quality of water generated.

With groundwater levels declining and water scarcity posing a challenge, particularly in tribal habitations and schools, officials said the administration is exploring the feasibility of installing similar units in water-stressed areas across the district.

“Such technologies could offer a sustainable, long-term solution to drinking water shortages and groundwater depletion. The initiative reflects the district administration’s focus on innovation-driven, sustainable and future-ready development, especially in remote and tribal regions,” the release explained.

During the visit, the Deputy Commissioner also interacted with students, reviewed classroom learning conditions, and directed education officials to submit proposals to address the school’s basic infrastructure and facility needs.
