Two CPI(M) workers were arrested on Saturday evening for allegedly attacking the house of T. Purushothaman, who had supported independent candidate V. Kunhikrishnan, and setting fire to a car parked in the courtyard. The arrested have been identified as Sudheesh, West area president of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) Payyannur, and Ajay Krishna. The police said the incident took place around 12:30 a.m. when a group reached the house, smashed window panes, and set the car ablaze. Purushothaman alleged that the CPI(M) workers were behind the attack. A CPI(M) branch member and former DYFI Kannur district leader, Purushothaman had earlier been expelled from the party over factional activities but was later reinstated.
