The CPI(M) State Committee on Tuesday demanded the immediate withdrawal of Government Order (GO) 22, which mandates the installation of smart prepaid electricity meters in government offices and institutions across Andhra Pradesh.

In a statement, CPI(M) State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao alleged that the State government had accepted conditions imposed by the Centre for raising loans and issued the G.O. accordingly.

He criticised the move, stating that it exposes the government’s ‘real intent’ behind power sector reforms.

The CPI(M) leader expressed concern that the order indicates a broader plan to extend smart prepaid meters to all consumers in the State. As per the G.O., such meters would first be installed in government departments, with electricity supply linked to advance payments. Failure to recharge after consumption would result in disconnection.

Mr. Srinivasa Rao warned that several government institutions, including schools and anganwadi centres, could face abrupt power cuts due to the delays in bill payments, disrupting services and affecting students and the public.

He pointed out that the TDP leaders had opposed smart meters in the past, even moving court against them, and termed the current decision as contradictory.

Alleging that there is little difference between the previous YSRCP government and the present TDP-led coalition on power policies, the CPI(M) leader urged the government to reconsider the decision in the interest of the public.
