The Communist Party of India (Marxist) State Secretary V. Srinivasa Rao has written to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday (March 17, 2026), urging immediate intervention to restore the sea mouth of the “Straight Cut Canal” at the Chirala coast in Bapatla district, which he stated has been adversely affected by encroachments.

In his letter, the CPI(M) leader highlighted that the L-shaped canal mouth at Chirala has been blocked with rocks, disrupting the natural flow and causing difficulties for fishing boats. He noted that several boats have been damaged due to the strong wave impact after the alteration of the canal structure.

Mr. Srinivasa Rao stated that despite complaints to district authorities and the formation of a committee comprising fishermen and officials, the issue remains unresolved. He pointed out that the canal, constructed in 1972, supports the livelihood of around 2,000 fishing families across 10 villages and also benefits aquaculture and agriculture in the region.

He also alleged that increasing real estate activity and resort construction along the coastline since 2021 have led to encroachments, further aggravating the problem. Farmers fear that without restoring the canal’s natural alignment, seawater intrusion could damage farmlands and drinking water sources.

Mr. Srinivasa Rao demanded restoration of the canal, action against encroachers, cancellation of certain land allocations, and compensation for affected fishermen, urging the Chief Minister to direct officials to act swiftly.
