CPI(M) State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao called for humanitarian assistance and support to Cuba, which is facing American aggression due to its refusal to bow to pressure from President Donald Trump. As Cuba stood its ground, the U.S. blocked crude oil headed from Venezuela, Russia, and Mexico, and imposed crippling sanctions, which has had a cascading effect on diverse sectors in the small country, he claimed.

Besides, a severe shortage of food and medicines has emerged. Though 185 countries, including India protested against the U.S. sanctions, Mr. Trump did not give up on his stubbornness, he observed.

Addressing a seminar on the crisis prevailing in Cuba, organised by the CPI (M) here on Monday, Mr. Srinivasa Rao said the U.S. bore a grudge against Cuba, an attitude that he deemed highly objectionable, as it was also directed towards various other countries that did not align with Mr. Trump’s views. By branding these nations as safe havens for drug lords, terrorists, and other criminal elements, Mr. Trump crafted his own narrative with economic gains in mind, the CPI(M) leader claimed.

The real intention behind all of this has been to capture the oil wealth and natural resources in those countries. Under these circumstances, Cuba is in desperate need of aid, Mr. Srinivasa Rao said, requesting people to contribute to the Cuba Solidarity Fund.
