The Communist Party of India has criticised the government for neglecting the academic and infrastructure needs of the Puducherry Technological University (PTU). In a statement, party secretary A.M. Saleem said in the initial stages the institute was known for its quality academic environment with good infrastructure for students and faculty. Of late, the academic environment has deteriorated due to vacancies in teaching and non-teaching staff. The number of students joining the institution has come down drastically, he said. “The staff quarters and roads are in a state of disrepair and dilapidated. Power and water supply have been disconnected in several areas. The management has not taken proper steps to control entry of dogs and snakes into classrooms. The campus which was once lush green has become a dry area due to poor upkeep of the campus,“ he said. The Puducherry government should take immediate steps to address the deficiencies in the functioning of the University, he said.
