The 5th Additional District and Sessions Court at Devanahalli has convicted and sentenced a man to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹10,000 in a chain-snatching case that occurred in 2019 in the Bagalur Police Station limits. According to the police, on March 14, 2019 at around 5.15 a.m., the complainant, Lakshmi, was out for a morning walk when two unidentified persons arrived on a scooter. On the pretext of asking for directions, they attempted to snatch the mangalya chain from her neck. When she resisted, one of the accused allegedly attacked her with a knife, causing bleeding injuries, and fled with a gold chain weighing about 40 gm. Following the incident, a case was initially registered at the Chikkajala Police Station. During the investigation, the accused was arrested and the stolen gold chain, knife and the two-wheeler used in the crime were seized. As the offence had taken place in the Bagalur Police Station limits, the case was later transferred there. After completing the investigation, then inspector Nandakumar filed a charge sheet before the court under Section 397 of the IPC. During the trial, Government Prosecutors R.T. Asha and Raju argued the case. After examining the evidence, the court found the accused, Syed Vaseem alias Vaseem, accused no. 1, guilty and convicted and sentenced him to seven years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹10,000.
