The Assembly constituency with the highest number of voters in the Sivaganga district – Karaikudi – which has received a significant number of developmental works in the last five years, has undergone a major transformation into an educational hub for southern Tamil Nadu. As of the 2026 electoral rolls, Karaikudi remains the largest constituency in the district with approximately 3,21,068 voters, followed by Sivaganga and Tirupathur. The constituency is currently represented by S. Mangudi of the Indian National Congress (INC). With major institutions like Alagappa University and CSIR-Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CECRI), coupled with steady economic growth, it has, surpassing the district capital, achieved the status of a municipal corporation in 2024. Also, with recent key developments like the establishment of a law college, agricultural college and Neo TIDEL park, it has also turned into an educational hub for the nearby districts and a regional job provider. Need for district status While the 2024 upgrade to a Municipal Corporation was a significant milestone, it has fuelled the argument for full district status. Proponents including local trade bodies and the public argued that various factors including distance from headquarters, revenue contribution and administrative load justify the creation of a separate district. Samy Thiravidamani, President, Chamber of Commerce and Industries, felt that Karaikudi, the commercial and educational heart of the region, contributed a disproportionately high share of revenue to the State compared to other towns in the district. Balachandar The Sivaganga district, which was created in 1983 had just six taluks, he noted. “Following growth of population and economy and for equal wealth distribution, it was further divided into nine taluks. With that increase, the district has a total of nine taluks, four Assembly Constituencies, one corporation, three municipalities, 12 unions, 12 town panchayats and 440 panchayats,” he added. “With a population and infrastructure already surpassing many existing district headquarters, residents believe a separate Karaikudi revenue district (likely comprising Karaikudi, Devakottai, and Tiruppathur taluks) would better streamline the governance,” Mr. Samy Thiravidamani argued. S. Kannappan, Secretary of the Chamber, said, despite possessing all the wealth and population, for every basic works like solving legal issues, registration of vehicles, getting approval of district administration for a project, they regularly had to travel at least 100 km to Sivaganga. While the civil court was operated in Devakottai, about 75% dealt there were from Karaikudi. Similarly, when most of the major automobile showrooms in the district were in Karaikudi, despite the Karaikudi Regional Transport Office (RTO) being elevated, they had to visit the Sivaganga RTO office for every vehicle registration, he noted. Others demand like establishment of a film city akin to the Taramani film city has also been a long-pending one. As the town is devoid of any major production units other than the local silver and brass, the voters felt that with the establishment of a film city, the town’s economic growth and its related service sectors would receive a significant and sustainable boost. Similarly, they believed that, with the upcoming pilot training centre at Karaikudi, their area would witness a significant boost in tourism, lodging, hotel, and transport sectors. If the necessary assistance like road facilities and other infrastructure facilities were on standby, building the necessary timely developments would not be challenging, the voters opined. “If the new government comes up with necessary support systems like formation of a society to promote the Karaikudi women-driven snacking cottage industries, the sector will enable women to create independent business platforms,” they noted.
