The human mind is a restless blend of past memories, future anxieties, and current desires. It is often likened to a “monkey” jumping from thought to thought. Natural human qualities such as desire, fear, attachment, and comparison drive this constant inner race. When desires go unmet, or we face the loss of what we are attached to, the mind suffers. Sri Thannerpalli Krishnan Swamy explained the spiritual concept of “Jalasandhi” — the confluence of two rivers, or a river meeting the ocean — and compared it to a profound metaphor for the human condition. Water never stays still and always finds a way around obstacles. In the same way, the mind remains in a state of flux. At a confluence, separate streams merge into one current. Ideally, our diverse experiences and emotions should become a source of calm. Yet, humans are often distracted by bodily desires and lose sight of the higher purpose of birth.
