Mayor V.K. Minimol inaugurated the construction of a dog shelter at Brahmapuram on Monday (March 9, 2026). The decision to build the shelter comes in the wake of the Supreme Court directive that stray dogs should be removed from public spaces and that local bodies must take the lead in the effort. In the first phase, the shelter will rehabilitate 1,000 stray dogs on one acre of land. The dogs will be shifted to the shelter after the Animal Birth Control (ABC) procedure. The shelter will be built in accordance with the standards set by the Animal Welfare Board. The shelter will include monitoring, post-operative and quarantine blocks, and a ward for disabled dogs. For every 100 dogs, 185 square metres of space has been allocated. Facilities will be provided for cooking food for the dogs, storing medicines and CCTV surveillance. An adoption centre will also function alongside, with the aim of reducing the number of stray dogs on the streets. Deputy mayor Deepak Joy presided over the function. Health standing committee chairperson Seena Gokulan delivered the welcome address.
