BJP SC Morcha national president Lal Singh Arya on Saturday (February 21) asserted that the BJP was committed to safeguarding the Constitution and welfare of Dalit and tribal communities. He dismissed what he termed as negative propaganda by the Congress that the NDA government thought of scrapping reservations for the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).

Participating as chief guest in the SC Morcha State conference here, Mr. Arya said there would be no threat to the Constitution as long as the Modi government existed and that the party’s concern for the uplift of Dalits and tribal folks was evident from the election of Ram Nath Kovind (a Dalit) and Droupadi Murmu (a tribal woman) as Presidents.

The Congress comment that Ms. Murmu was a ‘rubber stamp’ amounted to insulting the tribal communities to which she belongs, he observed.

Mr. Arya said the credit for the construction of five national memorials (Pancha Teerth) in honour of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, initiating the observance of Constitution Day in 2015 and declaring April 14 (Ambedkar’s birth anniversary) as a national holiday went to the NDA.

He claimed that 75% of the 82 crore people who were receiving free ration were from the SC and ST communities, and slammed Rahul Gandhi for allegedly prioritising family over the country.

BJP State president P.V.N. Madhav said he would press for the recognition of Gurram Jashuva as a ‘national poet’ and strive for the welfare of the 53 sub-castes who were overshadowed by the Mala, Madiga and Relli communities.

BJP SC Morcha national media convener Anima Sonkar, State vice-president G. Devanand, State secretary B. Nagalakshmi and BJP NTR district president A. Sriram were present.
