A group of sanitary workers staged a dharna in front of the Corporation Commissioner’s official residence in Palayamkottai on Saturday demanding the prompt payment of their Employees’ Provident Fund contributions deducted from their wages.

Over 1,500 permanent and temporary sanitary workers are collecting garbage from the houses and the business establishments in the 55 wards of Tirunelveli Corporation.

While the Corporation pays directly the salary of permanent sanitary workers, the temporary workers are drawing their wages from a private agency hand-picked by the Department of Municipal Administration.
