Rajya Sabha member Anil Kumar Yadav demanded the formation of a dedicated ‘Ahir (Yadav) Regiment’ in the Indian Army, recognising the valour and long-standing contribution of the community to national defence.

Raising the issue through a Special Mention in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, the MP urged the Union government to take immediate steps toward constituting a separate regiment. He said the bravery of the Ahirs dates back to resisting invasions by rulers such as Nader Shah and Timur, and extends to their participation in the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

He also referred to the extraordinary courage displayed by Ahir soldiers during the 1962 Sino-Indian War, particularly in the historic Battle of Rezang La, where Yadav soldiers fought with exceptional gallantry. He also recalled their sacrifices in the Kargil War and several other operations.

The MP pointed out that the Indian Army currently has regiments named after various communities, including the Jat Regiment, Sikh Regiment, Dogra Regiment and Gorkha Regiments. On similar lines a separate regiment of the Ahir community should be created.
