Mineral Development Corporation Chairman Eravathri Anil and Fisheries Corporation Chairman Mettu Sai Kumar asserted that the Congress has stood by its commitment to Backward Classes (BCs) by implementing enhanced reservations in local body elections, despite resistance from rival parties. Addressing the media, Mr. Anil said that despite the hurdles created by the Bharatiya Janata Party and Bharat Rashtra Samithi, the Congress ensured 61% reservations for BCs in municipal elections, which he claimed was far higher than what was mandated by the Election Commission. In parliamentary constituencies such as Warangal, Peddapalli, Mahabubnagar and Nizamabad, over 90% of seats were allotted to SC, ST and BC candidates, he said. Comparing the previous regime with the present, Mr. Anil said that during the BRS government, only four BCs were given mayoral posts out of 13 corporations, whereas the Congress has now allotted four BC mayor posts out of seven corporations. He alleged that the BRS even issued ‘B-forms’ to candidates who had filed cases against BC reservations. Questioning the BJP’s stand, Mr. Anil asked how the party could oppose the inclusion of Muslims in BC reservations while fielding a Muslim candidate in a BC-reserved ward in Karimnagar Municipal Corporation. He further stated that BCs were given a majority of posts in DCC president appointments and that in panchayat elections, Congress had allotted more than 42% tickets to BC candidates, most of whom emerged victorious.
