Journalists, writers, and environmentalists discuss conservation challenges and the role of responsible communication in addressing these issues

A media, literature, and environmentalist conclave held at the Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Idukki has called for an in-depth scientific study to identify the root causes of increasing human-animal conflict in the State.

The event was organised by the PTR East Division as part of its Platinum Jubilee celebrations and took place at Bamboo Grove in Thekkady on Sunday. Journalists, writers, and environmentalists gathered to discuss conservation challenges and the role of responsible communication in addressing these issues.

Kumily grama panchayat president M.M. Varghese inaugurated the conclave. In his address, he highlighted the growing anxieties of those living on the borders of forested areas.

Writer and journalist M.J. Babu said that “People have lived in forest settlements for generations without significant conflict. However, recent years have seen a surge in incidents causing loss of life and property. An in-depth study is essential to find the actual reasons behind this shift. While PTR’s conservation activities have helped mitigate some issues,” said Mr. Babu.

R. Lakshmi, Assistant Field Director of the PTR West Division, delivered the keynote speech. The function was presided over by Boby Abraham, former state president of the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ). Novelist S. Pushpamma, Idukki Press Club president Vinod Kannoli, M.J. Babu, Anil Vallikkode, Varghese C. Thomas, P.K. Haris, Shaji Kurisumood, among others, attended the conclave.

During the conclave, seven books were released under the banner of ’Mozhi’, a prominent writers’ collective.
