The Coimbatore District Police on Wednesday arrested 32 persons involved in various offences in a special drive conducted in view of the forthcoming Assembly election and as part of maintaining law and order for a peaceful electoral environment.

Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police K. Karthikeyan initiated the special drive targeting known offenders and history-sheeters. Coordinated operations were carried throughout the district in all the Sub – Divisions under the supervision of Deputy Superintendents of Police.

According to the police, 32 persons, who were found to be repeatedly involved in criminal activities, were arrested. Cases were registered under various heads, including seven for drug peddling. While 22 persons were remanded in judicial custody, 10 habitual offenders were made to execute bonds to keep peace and maintain good behaviour.

Three arrested with 749 kg of gutkha

The Kottur police near Anamalai arrested three persons with a total of 749 kg of banned tobacco products on Thursday. During a vehicle check at Kariyanchettipalayam, the police seized 230 kg of prohibited tobacco products from P. Pavunraj (39) of Thondamuthur and V. Paulraj (44) of Kottur. Similarly, the police carried out a search at Malayandipattinam and seized 519 kg of banned tobacco products from a warehouse. They arrested Vincent Victor (42) for stocking the contraband.
