The Government of Andhra Pradesh has ordered intensified monitoring of urban water supply systems following sporadic gastroenteritis and diarrhoeal cases reported in certain urban local bodies (ULBs).

During a high-level review, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed serious concern and directed all departments to act with urgency and accountability. He emphasised that safe drinking water is a fundamental public service obligation and warned that any lapse affecting public health would be viewed seriously.

The Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department, Public Health Engineering, Health Department and district administrations were instructed to work in close coordination and intensify field inspections.

Following the Chief Minister’s directions, the MA and UD Minister P. Narayana convened a review meeting with senior officials and ordered a state-wide special drive focusing on drinking water safety, repair of pipeline leakages, protection of vulnerable pipeline stretches, strengthening chlorination systems, desiltation of drains, and intensified mosquito control measures.

‘Zero tolerance’

Principal Secretary S. Suresh Kumar issued strict instructions, stating there would be ‘absolute zero tolerance’ towards negligence. Municipal Commissioners have been made personally responsible for ensuring that water supplied conforms to BIS standards. He directed that unsafe pipeline crossings be rectified immediately and mandated scientific water quality monitoring, including regular sampling and residual chlorine testing.

In suspected contamination cases, supply must be stopped immediately and alternative safe water arranged. Weekly compliance reports have been mandated, with strict disciplinary action warned for any proven negligence.
