A 17-year-old Class XI student of a government higher secondary school in Arithuvamangalam in Tiruvarur district, who was undergoing treatment after being bitten by a snake on the school premises, died on Sunday. The deceased was identified as Sivaprakash, son of Muruganandam and Radha of Sethanur near Arithuvamangalam. His father is a farmer. According to the police, the boy was bitten by Russell’s viper which had sneaked into his lunch bag. He was rushed to the Thanjavur Medical College and Hospital. However, the boy’s relatives alleged that the snakebite occurred when Sivaprakash was taking out books kept in a room within the school premises and that a snake hiding there bit him. The Arithuvamangalam police have registered a case and are investigating.
