A class VII student of the Social Welfare Residential School at Chennur in Mancherial district allegedly committed suicide due to alleged harassment by one of the teachers of the State-run residential educational institution.

The incident sparked outrage with the relatives of the deceased demanding stern action against the staff concerned for what they termed as an attempt to ‘conceal’ the incident.

The police said that the girl student allegedly consumed pesticide in her hostel room on Friday. Though she was first rushed to the Government Hospital in Chennur and later to a private hospital in Mancherial, she died while undergoing treatment on Sunday morning.

The bereaved family members alleged that the school staff initially tried to project the suicide attempt as a food poisoning incident. They accused the staff of delaying proper diagnosis and prompt medical treatment, leading to her death.

The Chennur police registered a case and launched a detailed investigation to find out the exact reason that led her to take the extreme step.
