The victim, 15-year-old Srinivasan, was the son of daily-wage labourers Munusamy and Muniyamma of Uranambedu village near Minjur. The couple also has a daughter. On Sunday, the couple had gone to a relative’s house along with their daughter, while Srinivasan remained at home. After playing in a kabaddi match in the evening, he returned home and slept. His grandmother was with him in the house at night. Early in the morning on Monday, the grandmother woke up and was doing household chores when the thatched hut suddenly caught fire and the flames spread rapidly. Srinivasan, who was sleeping inside the house, got trapped in the fire. Hearing his cries for help, neighbours rushed to the spot and attempted to douse the flames by pouring water. Fire and Rescue Services personnel also arrived and brought the blaze under control. However, the hut collapsed during the fire and fell on the boy. He sustained severe burn injuries and died on the spot. On receiving information, the police rushed to the scene, recovered the body, and sent it to the Ponneri Government Hospital for post-mortem examination.
