Civic group flags air, noise pollution by BMTC buses in Bengaluru; seeks urgent acton

A city-based civic group, Citizens for Citizens, has raised concerns over increasing air and noise pollution caused by buses operated by the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), urging authorities to implement immediate corrective measures.

In a letter addressed to the BMTC Managing Director, the organisation acknowledged the corporation’s critical role in providing public transport, operating over 7,000 buses and catering to nearly 45 lakh passengers daily. However, it pointed out that many of the 5,500 diesel buses continue to emit exhaust beyond permissible limits, with some reportedly releasing thick black smoke.

The group stated in the letter that such emissions contribute to harmful pollutants, including particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide, posing serious health and environmental risks. It recommended steps such as installing diesel particulate filters, adopting advanced emission control systems, conducting mandatory periodic checks, and improving driver training to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Highlighting noise pollution, the organisation said excessive honking and high-decibel horns, especially in electric buses, are adding to the problem. It called for stricter enforcement of noise regulations, regular maintenance, and better sensitisation of drivers, particularly in silence zones.

“While BMTC plays a vital role in keeping Bengaluru moving, there is an urgent need to address the rising air and noise pollution caused by its fleet. With better monitoring, regular maintenance, and driver sensitisation, BMTC can set an example for sustainable and responsible public transport in the city,” said Rajkumar Dugar, founder and convenor of Citizens for Citizens.
