District Collector Sumit Kumar has underlined the importance of minimising the risks posed by biomedical waste to public health and the environment, directing hospitals to strictly adhere to waste management norms. Reviewing the situation with medical and paramedical staff here on Sunday, the Collector asked officials to streamline the collection, segregation and scientific disposal of biomedical waste generated by government hospitals, private clinics and blood banks, including blood and placenta waste. He reiterated that waste must be segregated into four colour-coded categories, yellow, red, white translucent and blue, in accordance with prescribed rules. Cautioning that violations would invite penalties, he instructed hospital managements to submit compliance reports once every two months and assume full responsibility for ensuring safe disposal. Mr. Sumit Kumar also directed the officials concerned to implement geo-tagging and barcode systems to track waste from its source to final disposal at the Common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facility, ensuring there are no delays in collection or transportation. He added that a comprehensive review meeting would be conducted on March 28.
