Collector Sumit Kumar flagging off the road safety awareness rally at Ambedkar statue junction, in Chittoor on Wednesday. | Photo Credit: HANDOUT District Collector Sumit Kumar called for strict adherence to traffic rules to reduce road accidents while flagging off an awareness rally as part of the 37th National Road Safety Month celebrations, here on Wednesday. The rally organised by the District Transport department began at Ambedkar statue junction and proceeded up to Gandhi Bomma junction. Addressing the gathering, the Collector said the that the initiative was being observed since January 1 and would continue till the end of the month on the theme ‘Safety through Education and Transformation through Technology’ as envisaged by the Union government. He highlighted that road safety programmes would be implemented in coordination with the police, Roads and Buildings, Panchayat Raj, Municipal Administration, Health department and National Highways Authority of India. Mr. Sumit Kumar said extensive awareness campaigns would be conducted across the district during the month, alongside strict enforcement of motor vehicle laws. Action would be taken against traffic violations, including riding without helmets and other safety lapses. He further warned that strict measures would be initiated against drunk driving cases. “Driving licences of those found driving under the influence of alcohol will be mandatorily suspended for three months,” he said, and urged motorists to act responsibly.
