The police have launched an investigation after the charred body of a man, aged around 50, was found in the early hours of Saturday at a bylane at Tirupalaitturai Avul Car Street in Papanasam, Thanjavur district.

Based on a complaint lodged by Prabhu, in-charge Village Administrative Officer of Tirupalaitturai, the police rushed to the spot. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Papanasam subdivision, Murugavel, and Papanasam Inspector of Police Sagaya Anbarasu inspected the scene and recovered the body.

The remains were sent to the Ayyampettai Government Hospital for postmortem examination. Officials of the Forensic Sciences department, led by Assistant Director Gayathri, collected evidence from the spot. A sniffer dog named “Chola” was brought from Thanjavur to aid the investigation.

The Papanasam police have registered a case and are probing the identity of the deceased and the circumstances under which the body was found burnt. Efforts are on to ascertain the man’s identity and native place.
