Kulithalai police have registered cases against Srirangam DMK MLA M. Palaniyandi, his son Vimalathithan, a television reporter and a cameraman following an altercation at a stone quarry near Ayyarmalai in Karur district recently. Police said cases were registered based on complaints from both sides in connection with an incident on January 30. The quarry, located at Sivayam North village, is leased in the name of Vimalathithan. According to police, a confrontation broke out when quarry staff objected to journalists visiting the site to verify alleged violations. Members of both sides sustained injuries and were admitted to Kulithalai Government Hospital, with the journalists later referred to Tiruchi MGMGH. The journalists denied the allegations against them and accused the MLA, his son and quarry workers of assault and seizure of equipment, while the quarry lessee alleged trespass and physical assault. Based on complaints from both parties, the Kulithalai police on Thursday registered FIRs against both parties under sections relating to assault, criminal intimidation and use of abusive language. Further investigation is under way.
