The Cybercrime Police have registered an FIR after finding a fake Facebook account impersonating the Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru City, during routine social media monitoring. A case has been registered for identity theft and cheating by impersonation under Information Technology Act, 2000. According to the complaint, the Cybercrime Media Monitoring Cell on Thursday noticed that an unknown person had created a Facebook profile using the name and photographs of Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh. The account was allegedly used to mislead members of the public and cheat them out of money. Police said the impersonator contacted unsuspecting individuals under false pretences, leading to several complaints from victims who were allegedly defrauded. The fraudulent Facebook profile was found to be reused multiple times to gain public trust by falsely projecting official authority.
