A recent fire outbreak that destroyed a CNG-powered private bus at Kaduppini near Mavoor in Kozhikode has sparked widespread concern over passenger safety, with demands mounting for a fresh safety audit of private buses operating in the district.

Though no passengers sustained injuries in the incident, thanks to timely evacuation, it raised questions about the safety of vehicles retrofitted with compressed natural gas kits for a fuel-efficient ride. Some of the frequent commuters on city buses said there should be a fresh round of inspections to check the condition of CNG kits in buses and other vehicles used for taxi services.
